COD4 Config and or Tweaks Information and Questions

Hello All,

It's been a while since I've seen any helpful advice given or any questions regarding the settings or mp config file content. I noticed there are the average regular players playing on the Net Jam game server then there's a handful of exceptional players (you know who you are). I consider myself to be the average player that will sometimes have a great game, but mostly fall right into the middle of the score board. In the middle of the scoreboard, I'll often end up with a positive KD but at the end of each map, I'll notice quite a few 'regulars' with consistently negative KD. NOTE that I'm not interested in learning about any glitch settings that many would consider a cheat (for example the No Smoke glitch), no recoil, or settings that take away a ton of the crates and other game map objects (thereby opening the view, etc)

(1) Are you just using a stock config file made by the game after running it for the first time or are you using a version of someone else's config file?

For myself, I ended up using a different mp (multiplayer) config file and have been happy with it. I don't actually know if ANY config files available for download out there are always legit or not. I'm not knowledgeable enough on COD settings inside these files to determine this so what I went by is how if 'feels' meaning did it feel legit to me, or did it seem to offer something that weighed against my angelic-like morality? In my case, the config I selected and used is legit and my FPS is through the roof using the custom config file over stock. One of the better regular players on Net Jam server *(but not in the NJ clan) indicated, through game chat, that he made his own from scratch. I looked into that and the amount of time and research into every command/setting that could go into this file is pretty astounding and would require a pretty large time investment. I just don't have that patience, and it's much easier for me to copy/create other player profiles and copy different configs (downloaded) to test them.

Some config files seem to be designed for lower end PCs with the goal of increasing FPS. Higher FPS and lower ping does net a result of a better/faster gaming experience with COD4, which even the most non-technical players can grasp of course.

I am using a version of a config I downloaded from Bash n Slash. I've since discovered a GIANT config file site but have not tested/used any of the configs from there.

I'm not going to go through the steps on replacing, editing your config file. There's plenty of how to videos on this on youtube. I'm also not 'owning' the legit-ness of all these files as I mentioned earlier I don't know if it's possible to have illegal settings in the config file or not? I went by my own observation during testing. I also tested each one on a different server before playing with it on the Net Jam server.

(2) Scripts or Macros, do you use them, what do you do with them?
One thing I noticed that many of the average and better players have is a way to cancel the gun reload sequence and resume firing right away. There are a couple ways to achieve this, pressing '1' and '1' again quickly, or sprinting for a millisecond which I almost never see from other players. Instead, I noticed there are these 'scripts' that players are using - or aka 'macros' to where you can bind a key in the mp config file to perform multiple things. There exists a 'reload cancel' script that I believe these better players are using. This has been out for years, but I never used them but noticed time and time again, players are using them on the NJ server so it must be OK? For the first time since COD4 first came out, I added this macro into my mp config file around 2 weeks ago and am still testing it. I'm finding out that it will take me a long time to get used to using it - let alone remember that I still have it available to use, I bound the setting to my scroll up mouse wheel and out of the last 10 times I was in the middle of a reload and an enemy suddenly appeared, I only remembered to use it one time successfully so far. Remembering it's there in the heat of the moment is proving to be the challenge for me so far! lol

The only other 'macro' I have is through my mouse driver to where I have my side mouse button bound to a keybd key - and that keybd key is map to the knife.

I'd be interested in hearing about what scripts/macros others are using. I believe the more people are informed and can make improvements to their situation, the better the competition will be in the game as long as the settings are all legal and legit.

(3) Are there any config file settings and/or scripts that capable of offering illegal settings with respect to playing on the NJ server? I just want to know so that I continue to be very careful with what configs I choose to use.

Other settings I am wondering about:
(a) Hold to sprint instead of toggle? I thought I used to have this setting but through casual google look-up it looks like there's only the toggle sprint capability. Is that correct? I would much rather hold to sprint so that when I let go of the shift key, I immediately stop sprinting. If there's a config setting, what would that be?

(b) Speaking of stopping from a sprint. I noticed some of the better players are able to 'stop' and resume shooting much sooner than the average player and this seems to make a HUGE difference in which player is going to go down. Does anyone know how to tweak this specifically? And I mean to shorten transition time from the time you stop sprinting (toggle or otherwise) to the point where one can shoot the gun again. I have very low ping, yet when I toggle off sprint, I still have a lengthier time to get back to the shooting stance than many of the other players I've observed. I believe this behavior has been 'missed' by many many players - in fact I didn't notice it until quite recently when I was spectating one of the better players (no names!) Is there a config setting for this? What would that be?

(c) I know there's a way to change HUD colors including the colors above player names per side. I know there's a way to use custom uniforms on single player.
This has been on my mind because I am partially color-blind so on some maps, I have a hard time seeing Marines or other uniform colors depending on the map. Uniform color was a nice change one could make in the old RVS FPS game
- Is there a legit way to change the side's uniforms for multiplayer?
- If not, what about the player name colors that are above player names, how to do this?

(d) Increase UAV size because I'm older and my eyesight is declinging. I figured this one out the other day because I always had trouble seeing the red dots on the tiny UAV and since I have a giant monitor screen, I looked into this. I did it this way:
in the mp config file:
seta compassSize "1.5"

I believe default is 1.0 and any higher than 1.5 then you would run the risk of it being too large, even on a larger screen. I believe many players knew about this one - I didn't. doh.

But in doing so, I had to move the chat text position and the say text position to another area of the screen. These settings worked well for me:

Let's keep this post thread constructive please. I'd love to hear other player's advice or suggestions, settings they use.

The rest is strategy, speed, accuracy, reflexes, instincts, map knowledge and in the end, that all plays in to who will be at the top of the scoreboard. If this thread goes well, perhaps we can start another thread discussing strategies.

It took me sometime reading this Turbox, but is nice that you are trying to help others players.

This is basically what i use on every game more frecuently.

I use the default config, tried bash and slash when years ago didn't see any difference with the default one though.

For scripts, binds, or macros I don't have any of them. Well I had binds that said: Hello , Good Bye, Nice Shot etc. Other than that none.

I would like to change the uniforms as well haha BOG ......I become a semi-blind player in both teams..so I just shoot anything that's moving.

What I would like to know is how to disable the grasses some times...it amazes me how some players will just shoot me covered in tall grass.. with splendid accuracy.

If you wanna see better on BOG u can use this:
bind F9 " SelectStringTableEntryInDvar FPS FPS r_fullbright 1" (well, it works for me. )

And for the grass:

It removes just a small area for certain distance, but helps a little bit.

Awesome BAM, thanks for the suggestions - so using the 'F' keys, looks like you can toggle a wide range of settings to optimize each map's look.

When I played competitively in promod I had the most ridiculous config you could think of. There were a lot of cool options you had access to that aren't in the base game. I remember a teammate of mine having a config setting that made dead bodies float to the ceiling so people that tried to hide in dead bodies weren't so hidden. I especially miss the film tweaks and stuff that seem to be disabled outside of promod. Want the map to have a green or blue tint to it and be able to see enemies with better contrast? No problem. For now, since there's very limited things you can do with the config file, I just use commands that help with bullet registry. I've used these commands for years, and it definitely helps. I used to go super tryhard mode when I played ladders and scrims, so I tuned my settings for better visibility, but I don't see the need to do that anymore.

Less than 70 ping- /cl_packetdup 1
More than 100 ping- /cl_packetdup 2
Terrible connection- /cl_packetdup 3

/cl_maxpackets 100
/rate 25000
/snaps 30

And don't forget to set your max FPS to something you can hold consistently. I can hold 333 and 500, but there are issues with having maxfps set at 333/500/1000. So I leave mine at 250. If you're using Paradox's config, then he will most likely have all of these settings enabled already.

These are all I remember off of the top of my head. There used to be a website up with all of the commands I used for my configs, but I think it has been taken down. I'll take a look at my config file and see if there's anything else in there that I remember setting years ago.

Sorry it appears I have been banned from the forums on my IP, keep getting a 403 forbidden message when I attempt to go to any net-jam page, I posted about it already, I use my own custom config, posted about it in ltk's thread about me hacking, lol seems like he went after everyone for hacking... I'm more than happy to share it, I just ask that you don't re share it as I do with everyone I give it to. On my work cell now when I get access back I'll pm it to ya

Sorry for hijacking a (relatively old) thread (also, hi, I'm Bass, btw.) but I'd also like to know about the extent to which config tweaks are allowed; most servers (and I presume Net-Jam too) allow stuff such as decals, sun, water and gun reflections to be turned off, since these changes impact FPS but not visibility. Someone mentioned fullbright before, which goes a bit further (and requires tweaking a DVAR entry in the process) by removing all shadows from the game, therefore improving visibility significantly while also giving a huge FPS boost. This makes players more visible on dark maps like Bog but also enables you to see downhill from far back in the uphill house on crossfire, for example (I do not have fullbright enabled, but I did experiment with it when I was a mod over at another server in order to see the extent of its impact). IIRC, it also disables the muzzle flash on any gun (I'm not 100% on that, though). It's similar with the tweaks that disable bushes at a given distance, since they boost FPS while also giving you an edge over other players. I'd be inclined to use any of these commands if they are allowed - not for the edge, but to be able to make use of the obvious advantages of stable 125 FPS on my potato computer- but I also like playing on Net-Jam servers way too much to risk being banned, so I'd be greatful if an Admin could chip in on that.

As far as I know, you can not exceed certain perameters unless the server allows it. Or in other words the changes you made to the config will not be applied. When punkbuster was running it used to spit you out of a server if you tried to go below the threshold allowed, or force you to change the parameter in like 30 seconds before kicking you. I believe the same principal still applies only without the kick and instead the changes will not be applied and are shown in red in the full console. I'm not for sure on this, so if someone else can chime in feel free.

Old thread!  I know, I know.. but it's gotten alot of views and I noticed this only because I was googling something for COD4 (MP configs or something to that effect) and this page came up first in google.  We should get $$ for this. haha

 

As many players know by now, I'm partially color-blind and am constantly challenged on certain maps to where I can barely see the marine uniform colors against the map's textures.  I re-read this entire posting and set to put together a COD4 MP config that, mainly thanks to BAM's suggestions - have some handy options for helping me overcome this coloring problem - namely the F1-F2-F9 keys.  The other commands (other F keys) are not working and I'm assuming that the server may have those options set to where they can't be set??  Not sure.

 

Providing this MP config file with the assumption that all of you can easily google or youtube 'cod4 mp config' to get a how-to on where to put these.  Here is the complete config.  I am personally tweaking the FPS and a couple other settings back to where I can jump a little higher (like in my original config) but other than that, liking the F key options.  Obviously keep the binds from your config for movement, shooting, etc or try mine (if you dare) and walk away with additional finger pain!  Onbe more comment in case ya still didn't know this!  COD4 was the ONLY COD game that allowed one to literally copy/paste their player profile folder then rename the profile (no spaces BTW) to have a completely separate profile to choose from the in-game menu before connecting to a server.  This is great because one can test my config out in a separate profile without interfering with the current (or mostly used) one.  The config is derived partially from 'yitch' config, and the suggestions from BAM and others from this very thread.

This is my normally used config.  It has the bigger UAV window (so I can see!) but none of the graphical stuff.  High FPS setting so I can jump to certain places a little easier.  Use a moderate to high end machine versus the last posting config had a great color thing to play with and is geared towards lower end systems, old laptops, etc.  This config was mainly from Pr1me back when he was uh... playing here.  But I also tweaked it enough to where it's basically just my config now LOL.

I really really like this config and have used it, as it is, for years here.  At one time, I could select to join 'Marines' on those few maps I have trouble seeing their UNIs so one could say, the admins and there clever auto-balance setting made in late 2021 propelled me to explore the other config!
